Steelers Squad

Steeler the Dog....

Hi, my name is Steven, but you might know me better as ‘Steeler the Dog’.

It may be hard to believe, but I have been supporting the Steelbacks team for over 100 years!

It all started back in 1878 when I became a soldier for the British Army within the Northamptonshire Regiment. This was in the Battle of Talavera during the Peninsular War.
It was a long and gruelling battle that took a lot of stamina and team work from the entire Regiment, but together we fought hard to protect our country. Sometimes the boys would feel sad and tired, so I used to cheer them on and encourage them to stay positive. I even started to suggest we play a game of cricket or two to keep everyone’s spirit up.

When the war had finished we practised to make sure that not only was everyone’s bowling and wicket keeping skills on point but that we could also function properly as a team, the way we did as army soldiers.

I loved the game so much and I loved seeing the team do so well. So much so that I used to get distracted from actually playing and just stand to the side cheering. The boys loved it!

In 1905, we were finally recognised as a First Class County after years of hard work. I had never been more proud of the team or excited…we were on our way!
I didn’t make the team but that’s ok because I was awarded the biggest honour of all… becoming the Steelbacks first and only mascot! And I have been ever since.

I recently took three years out to study at the UK and Ireland Mascot University but now I’m back with all new knowledge and my degree in Mascoting, ready to support my team harder than ever!
And unlike the other Club mascots, I don’t need to learn the history of the club, because I was a part of it.

And just like I know the Steelbacks will always be a First Class County, I know I will always be here to cheer them on. If you want to contact me, my email is
