Full Match Report
Steven Crook and new skipper Stephen Peters put Northamptonshire in a strong position one the first day of their LV= County Championship Division Two match against Glamorgan at the SWALEC Stadium.
After being put into bat, the hosts were dismissed for 134 - the last nine wickets falling for just 76 runs as Crook claimed 4-30 in 12 overs.
In reply, Northants had reached 108 for three, a deficit of 22, with 20.3 overs of the day remaining when rain brought a premature close; Peters was 60 not out at that stage.
The visitors had the better of the opening session as Glamorgan, who gave debuts to former Sussex stalwart Murray Goodwin and Australian Michael Hogan, struggled to 74 for four by lunch.
They suffered an early blow when Ben Wright was caught behind by wicketkeeper David Murphy off David Willey.
Opener Will Bragg and Stewart Walters looked as if they had weathered the threat of the new ball, though, putting on 51 in 20 overs.
Yet Northamptonshire struck thrice in the space of 17 balls; Crook got rid of Bragg, caught at square-leg by Kyle Coetzer, and Marcus North, taken sharply at first slip by Andrew Hall - who trapped Walters leg before in between his partner's two scalps.
Things did not get much better for Glamorgan after lunch.
Much had been expected of Goodwin yet he fell for just eight, caught behind off Willey, while Jim Allenby lasted only six balls before being pinned in front by Trent Copeland.
Some positive batting from Mark Wallace, who struck 18 from 19 balls, gave Glamorgan brief respite before the captain was bowled not offering a shot to Crook.
Dean Cosker hung around for 18 deliveries without scoring, acting as a foil for the hard-hitting Graham Wagg, but was eventually bowled by Hall.
Wagg was Glamorgan's last hope yet, after reaching 26 from 36 balls, he edged to Copeland at third slip, giving Crook his fourth victim. Hogan was last man out, driving Hall straight down the throat of Crook at mid-off.
Northamptonshire lost their first wicket when Coetzer was bowled by Hogan and, after tea, Reed claimed two in as many balls; David Sales was caught in the gully and Alex Wakely trapped lbw.
Northamptonshire were forced to settle for a draw as the final day of their LV= County Championship Division Two match against Glamorgan at the SWALEC Stadium became a complete washout.
