Northants Steelbacks Blind cricketers are to take part in a demonstration of Blind Cricket during the lunch interval of the Ashes Test against Australia at Lords on Saturday July 18th.
"It is the first time Blind Cricket has been showcased at the home of English Cricket during an international match." Said the Steelbacks coach John Wood, who is also General Secretary of Northamptonshire Association for the Blind.John went on to say "We are proud to be able to demonstrate to a worldwide audience that Blind and Partially Sighted people are able to do most of the things sighted people do, and take for granted. In particular that Visually impaired sportsmen and women are just as talented as their sighted colleagues."
"This is recognition of all the dedicated work, and time which is committed by players, coaches, and supporters of blind cricket in the U.K."
"Our Steelbacks Blind cricket team have been supported by Northants County Cricket Club, and on Saturday July 4th.
we were the first Blind Cricket Team to play a competitive match at a first class county ground. We narrowly lost to Essex Tigers in the semi final of the British Blind Sport Knock out Cup, Tigers scored a remarkable 381 in 30 overs, Captain Fiaz Iqbal making a world record 258 not out. The Steelbacks managed 366 in reply, which would have been a winning total in any other 30 over match.
