Northamptonshire suffered a crushing 188-run defeat in Thursday's Second XI Trophy match against Middlesex at Dunstable.

Ireland international Paul Stirling led the way with 110 as the visitors piled up 268-6 in their 50 overs.

Seamers Chad Barrett (3-53) and Ollie Stone (2-45) returned the best County bowling figures - but Northamptonshire's reply then hit trouble right from the start.

James Harris (4-21) snapped up the first wickets as the County crumbled to 34-4, and left-arm paceman Gurjit Sandhu (3-13) finished the job as the innings folded for 80 in the 33rd over - no batsman reaching 20.

The seconds will hope for much better things against the same opponents in the T20 competition at Uxbridge on Friday,
