The opening day of the LV= County Championship clash between Northants and Middlesex had perfect batting weather, with the sun and blue skies overhead.
Northants therefore would have been delighted when skipper Stephen Peters won the toss and elected to bat. Northants got off to a nice start, putting on 39 before losing James Middlebrook, when he was bowled by the impressive Toby Roland-Jones for 20.
After Middlebrook was dismissed, Peters and David Sales kicked on, putting on 75 runs between them, before Peters was caught off Roland-Jones for an excellent 67, with the score on 114/2. Northants looked set to go in to tea in a strong position, but lost an important wicket just before the break, when Sales was caught off Murtagh for 43.
Following tea, Middlesex came out firing, as Northants lost three wickets for just six runs in six overs. Andrew Hall and Ian Butler had looked to see the day out, but Hall fell just a few overs before stumps, as he was trapped lbw by Roland-Jones for 28. Rolland-Jones was the star of the day, as he ended on figures of 5 for 49.
Northants ended the day on 251/8, with Ian Butler on 27 and Maurice Chambers on 1. On day two, Northants will be looking to add to their overnight total, before bowling at Middlesex and their very dangerous openers, Chris Rogers and Sam Robson.
