Warwickshire are the latest visitors to the County Ground, to take on Northants in the LV= County Championship.
Much like the hosts, Warwickshire’s season has not been going according to plan, as they started off as one of the favourites to win the LV=CC, but the 2012 Champions are currently sitting sixth in the division.
Northants Skipper Stephen Peters won the toss and elected to bat first. Northants got off to a reasonable start, putting on 29 before Peters was trapped lbw by Chris Woakes for 13. James Middlebrook and Rob Keogh both fell 27 runs later, as Rikki Clarke had Middlebrook caught behind for 33 and bowled Keogh for 0 in the same over.
Richard Levi who was making his LV=CC debut and Matthew Spriegel then put on almost 50 runs, before both batsmen fell with the score on 115, shortly into the afternoon session. Spriegel was the first to fall when he was trapped lbw by Chris Wright for 16, before Levi was caught behind off Woakes for an excellent 43.
When Ben Duckett fell with the score on 141/6, all Northants fans would have been worried about what score the team would finish on. However, Rob Newton and Andrew Hall battled back brilliantly, as they put together a big partnership. Hall eventually fell when he was bowled by Woakes for 45, but this was only after he and Newton had added 129 runs to the Northants total.
Steven Crook was the last wicket of the day to fall, as he was caught behind off Wright for 0, with the score on 282/8. However this didn’t stop Newton reaching a brilliant century, the first for a Northants player in the LV=CC this season. With bad light stopping play early, Northants ended the day on 297/8, with Newton on 108 and Olly Stone on 1, as the pair will look to add a few more batting points to Northants’ tally in the morning session.
