Singer-songwriter James Walsh, the former lead singer of indie band Starsailor, is set to support Sir Tom Jones at his concert at the County Ground. www.jameswalshmusic.com
James has had his creativity revitalised by his solo work. Working with Skarbek, he was able to bring a more diverse influence (Randy Newman, Rufus Wainwright) – which, he chuckles – “the [Starsailor] lads weren’t very into”, acquiring a new maturity and a new sound. James has written songs with Eliza Doolittle, Melanie C, Suzanne Vega, amongst others. Playing with musicians often ten years his junior has resulted in a “mix of styles.” This has given him a new found confidence as a solo artist, resulting in his stunning debut solo album, which is out now.
TURNING POINT (https://itunes.apple.com/album/turning-point/id821017103) was recorded last autumn at Genesis’ legendary Fisher Lane Studios and produced by Harry Rutherford. “Working on the solo album was a great experience,” says James. Adding, “It was great to work with different musicians from different musical backgrounds; there was that excitement of a new sound coming together. I had a clear idea of the sound I wanted to create but I think there was room for everyone to express themselves. You have to push each other more to try and create something new and develop the sound.”
James joins singer-songwriter Sally Barker, another support act, who is fresh from becoming a finalist on BBC1’s The Voice where she had Sir Tom Jones as her mentor.
