Macdonnell builds strong position

Gemaal Hussain and Charlie Macdonnell produced stand-out performances as Northamptonshire continued to dominate their Second XI Championship match against Gloucestershire at Thornbury on Wednesday.

Seamer Hussain - released by Somerset last season - picked up five wickets as the home side, resuming on 75-4, was dismissed for 221.

Despite claiming a first-innings lead of 170 the County opted not to enforce the follow-on, and eventually declared on 232-8 in their second innings thanks to 90 from Macdonnell, who has been creating a positive impression in the NCL Premier Division with Horton House this summer.

Set to score 403 for victory, Gloucestershire closed on 58-0 and will resume on Thursday needing a further 345 for victory with all their wickets standing.
