Second XI defeated by Somerset

Northants Second XI were beaten by their Somerset counterparts this evening by three wickets in the latest Second XI Trophy match at Campbell Park in Milton Keynes.

After Northants won the toss and elected to bat first, Ben Howgego and Adam Rossington (11) opened the batting for the hosts and started brightly as the pair put on 29 for the first wicket before the former was trapped LBW from Somerset prospect Jamie Overton.

Howgego (14) was the second wicket to fall before David Murphy (3) came and went quickly for the hosts. Macdonnel (22) came in and scored feely and put together a partnership with Carter (19) before both batsman were dismissed in quick succession to leave Northants 79-4.

Saif Zaib, recently having made history after scoring 230 from RGS Wycombe, came to the crease and was briefly supported by Graeme White (8) as the home side struggled to put together any meaningful partnerships.  Zaib (32) was very well supported by both Chad Barrett (33) and Maurice Chambers (24) as Northants were bowled out for 183 from 43 overs.

In response, Somerset made a solid start to their innings from Abell and Brand putting on 45 for the first wicket partnership. It was Barnett who took two wickets in quick succession as Somerset were reduced to 45-2. Abell and Davey then came together and put on 27 before Maurice Chambers bowled Davey (13) as Somerset found themselves 72-3 with the game in the balance.

However, Abell and Waller (39) then started to take the game away from the hosts with a partnership worth 62 before he was bowled by Hussain. Abell was starting to take the game away for Somerset as he brought up the only half-century of the game although new batsman Regan (7) was trapped LWB by Zaib to leave the visitors 145-5.

Barrett then took two quick wickets to leave Somerset 167-7, but Abell (70*) and Groenewald (8*) saw the visitors home to win by three wickets.

The two sides will meet again in the Second XI Championship fixture starting tomorrow at Campbell Park. As with all Second XI cricket, entrance to the ground is free.
