Trialist Lloyd Paternott played another impressive innings for Northamptonshire's Second XI - but couldn't prevent the County suffering a narrow defeat in Friday's one-day Trophy fixture against Essex at Coggeshall.
Paternott top-scored with 66 in Northamptonshire's 285-8 in their 50 overs - Championship skipper Stephen Peters weighing in with 51 while former County man Monty Panesar claimed 3-42...and two catches!
Essex reached their target at 289-8 to win by two wickets with just four balls to spare, despite the best efforts of Saif Zaib (3-54) and Vicram Sohal (2-47).
The home side secured a more comfortable eight-wicket success in the three-day Championship match between the two sides which concluded on Thursday.
Paternott (83) and Andrew Lowe (78 not out) starred in the County's 335-6 declared - and Essex then closed their first innings 32 runs behind on 303-7, Gemaal Hussain picking up 3-43.
Northamptonshire's batting then hit trouble at 120-5 in their second knock, despite 55 from James Kettleborough, and although the County rallied to 220 all out it left Essex a reachable target of 253 which they managed for the loss of only two wickets.
