The Steelbacks hosted a strong New Zealand ‘A’ side in a one-day game at the County Ground yesterday with the visitors coming out ontop by 70 runs (D/L).
The game gave some members of the Steelbacks squad a chance to put their hand up ahead of the Royal London One-Day Cup clash against Yorkshire Vikings on Tuesday 5th July. Whilst New Zealand ‘A’ were finalising their preparations for the triangular series against England Lions and Sri Lanka ‘A’, which starts next week.
The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first and the Steelbacks got off to a strong start as the bowlers took three early wickets, leaving the visitors on 48/3 with less than 10 overs played. However after Devcich (45) fell in the 22nd over with the score 105/4, Colin Munro and Colin De Grandhomme quickly changed the momentum of the game. The pair put on a 199-run partnership in just 20 overs.
Munro and De Grandhomme were the undoubted stars of the day, as both men scored 151 at a fast rate and showed their amazing hitting ability, as New Zealand ‘A’ eventually finished on 424/7. The two men really put on a show, leading the visitors to the 8th highest ever List A score.
Despite facing an uphill battle, the opening pair of Kyle Coetzer (60) and Stephen Peters (54) did get the hosts off to a good start putting on 105 for the first wicket inside 20 overs. After Peters fell with the score on 130, Adam Rossington and Ben Duckett were able to add 54 runs before the rain came down, and ended the game prematurely.
Unfortunately due to the big total set by New Zealand ‘A’, the Steelbacks were always to going to struggle with the Duckworth-Lewis method and the hosts lost by 70 runs.
Next up for the Steelbacks is a return to the Royal London One-Day Cup, as they host Yorkshire Vikings in a day/night game on Tuesday 5th August. CLICK HERE to purchase tickets.
