Northants cricket announced today that Stephen Peters will be made Club Captain for the 2013 cricket season and Alex Wakely will be the Club Vice-Captain and will captain the club in one day cricket.
Stephen brings a wealth of cricket experience to the role and having just signed a new two year contract with the club. He will also be enjoying a well-earned Benefit in 2013 and we believe he has a lot to offer the club and team in his new role.
Alex, who has progressed through the club's development system, will be Captain in all one day cricket next summer. The decision forms part of the club’s succession planning for the future. Alex captained a very difficult t20 campaign last summer with enormous credit.
Chief Executive David Smith said ‘’he believed the splitting of the roles between Red and White ball cricket was something that had been identified by a number of counties as the best way forward in the modern day game.
This move comes after current Captain Andrew Hall informed the club that he wished to step down as Captain and focus on the playing side of his game. He was appointed halfway through the 2010 cricket season and has performed the role with distinction for two and a half years, with the club narrowly missing out on promotion to Division one in 2011 by one point. The Board of Directors wished to place on record their sincere thanks to Andrew Hall for his contribution in this role.
David Ripley, Northants Cricket First Team Coach confirmed that Andrew has a very big part as a player to play over the next two years with the bat & ball, his fitness and presence on the pitch is critical to the balance of our team and our ability to be competitive in all forms of the game.
