Northants Cricket Announce a £23k Profit

Northants Cricket is delighted to announce a profit of £22.9k for the financial trading year up to 30th September 2012.

Northants Cricket Chief Executive David Smith said, “The profit was achieved despite a decrease in turnover from the previous year, which had included a one off ground development ECB payment, a very successful tourist game against India and an Elton John concert, so comparisons are very difficult.

Costs have been well controlled throughout the year with a £475k (13 %) like for like reduction and this has allowed the club to report a small profit in a summer that saw us lose 823 overs / 52 hours of cricket in home matches. We also had a very challenging t20 schedule where we had to play three of our five home games in a six day period and the other two unfortunately were rain interrupted.

The UK economic challenges also meant that discretionary spend was under more pressure than we had seen for many years. Add to that the London Olympics and the European Football Championships both held during the cricket season and the impact on the domestic game was extremely challenging. Many local companies also had restricted budgets for entertaining, which also had an adverse effect on the sponsorship and corporate hospitality market.

2013 promises to offer better commercial opportunities with the club entertaining Australia for a two day game on 15th & 16th August. The t20 schedule looks more favourable and we are hoping to announce summer music concert dates shortly for both June and September.

Over the course of the next two years the club will benefit from a significant capital investment programme that will see the players and members dining room and Ken Turner suite fully re-furbished with much improved facilities. This will also help us develop our Corporate Hospitality and Events revenues in an effort to establish a more rounded and sustainable business model that is less reliant on cricket associated revenues.

On the playing front, last summer was disappointing for everyone connected with the club. We have made many changes both on and off the field to help us face the challenges of being more competitive in all three domestic competitions. The recruitment of Matthew Spriegel and Steven Crook will bring a much better balance to the squad and we are still hopeful of bringing a bowling overseas player to the club for the 2013 cricket season.

A core group of home-grown players, with a sense of who and what they represent, alongside good senior role model cricketers, with a quality overseas player, is still, we believe, the best way to bring success to the cricket club.

Our players will benefit from 11 days in Barbados for pre-season preparation in March and I must place on record my sincere thanks to the Northants supporters club for their very kind donation towards the tour.

Our First Team Coach David Ripley, new Club Captain Stephen Peters and One Day Captain Alex Wakely are all looking forward to their first full summer in charge as the club embarks on a new era of cricket management and we wish them every success.

The club is very much looking forward to 2013 and the exciting opportunities that it offers. I wish all Northants cricketers, members and followers a very enjoyable summer and perhaps most of all after last year, a dry one.”
