Con de Lange hit a battling half-century to keep Northamptonshire afloat on the opening day of their Second XI friendly against Leicestershire at sunny Finedon.
De Lange's knock of 52 off 58 balls - including a six and three fours - was the only contribution of note as the County were dismissed for 191.
But the visitors also struggled on a day for the bowlers, closing on 157-7 in reply.
Muhammad Azharullah claimed the bowling honours with 3-44 while Luke Evans, de Lange and Rob Keogh picked up a wicket apiece.
The match continues at Avenue Road on Tuesday.
