Matt Spriegel's unbeaten century paved the way for Northamptonshire's exciting three-run victory over Surrey in Monday's Second XI Trophy contest at Campbell Park.
Spriegel enjoyed himself against his former club, hitting a six and 12 fours in 118 not out off 126 balls - boosting the County to 221-8 in their 40 overs.
Luke Blackaby (36) and Rob Keogh (27) offered best support - but Surrey then looked like winning as Dominic Sibley (67) and Akhil Patel (62) laid the foundations for a successful reply.
But Luke Evans snapped up two wickets - including Patel's - in the 36th over, and the visitors came up just short on 218-7 after failing in their attempt to score 10 runs off the final over from Gavin Baker.
Evans and Ricky Moore finished with a couple of wickets apiece, the opthers falling to Keogh, Baker and Sam Sweeney.
The two sides will begin a three-day Championship match at the same venue on Tuesday,
