Andrew Hall, David Willey, Alex Wakely and Matthew Spriegel were among the Steelbacks squad members to enjoy a useful Twenty20 workout at the County Ground on Wednesday.
Ahead of the side's FL t20 opener against Gloucestershire on Friday night, Northamptonshire fielded first-teamers in the two Second XI T20 competition contests with Unicorns.
Hall led the way in the first game, cracking 83 off 65 balls as the County reached 137-6 - after Kyle Coetzer, Spriegel and Cameron White had all departed with just 20 on the board.
It wasn't enough, though, as Unicorns reached their target at 138-6 with one delivery to spare - thanks to Garry Park's quickfire 46 not out. Spriegel (2-28) and fellow spinner James Middlebrook (2-15) proved the pick of the bowlers, sending down tidy four-over stints.
The Steelbacks gained revenge in the second match as half-centuries from Wakely (50) and Willey (58) boosted Northamptonshire to 165-7. Willey faced only 35 balls - and skipper Wakely a couple more.
The Unicorns were then restricted to 146-8 in reply with Spriegel (4-28) again proving effective, backed up by Graeme White and Willey who each claimed 2-25.
The seconds are back in action on Thursday - tackling the Unicorns again in a one-day Trophy fixture at Oundle School.
