Ollie Stone's all-round efforts proved in vain as Northamptonshire siffered an 81-run defeat in Monday's Second XI Trophy match against Kent at Beckenham.
Stone claimed 2-33 from a tidy seven-over stint - backed up by Usman Arif (2-40 from eight) - as the hosts posted 235-8 after being put in to bat.
Sam Billings (65) and Daniel Bell-Drummond (48) laid the foundations for a good score with an opening stand of 77 - but in contrast the County never got going with the bat and slipped to 154 all out after 34 overs.
Stone smashed 43 from 29 balls to ensure respectability, but apart from him only Ricky Moore (34) offered much resistance.
The two sides begin a three-day Championship match, also at Beckenham, on Tuesday.
