Matt Spriegel spun his way to six wickets as Northamptonshire enjoyed a successful opening day in their Second XI Championship match against Sussex at Horsham.

The horrors of Monday's Trophy contest were forgotten as Spriegel claimed 6-50 from 23 overs, helping to dismiss the hosts for 214 after they had elected to bat first.

Ben Brown - in at number three - held Sussex together with a solid 110, repairing the damage after Luke Evans dismissed Rory Hamilton-Brown for a golden duck with the seventh ball of the match.

Openers James Kettleborough (41) and Josh Tolley (21) launched the County's reply with a 61-run partnership and Northamptonshire closed on 115-3 with Christian Davis and Luke Blackaby - unbeaten on 21 and 19 respectively - set to resume on Wednesday morning.
