Newton steers seconds home

Skipper Rob Newton led Northamptonshire to a four-wicket victory over MCC Universities in the Second XI Championship at Desborough on Friday - not without a few alarms!

Needing 151 to close out a match they'd dominated throughout, the seconds slipped to a perilous-looking 92-5 before Newton's unbeaten 31 settled the issue.

Resuming on 152-5 in their second innings, just 24 ahead, the students rallied to 278 all out thanks largely to Zac Elkin (77).  Matt Spriegel finished with 5-92 for an excellent ten-wicket match haul.

Spriegel's 40 was then the only contribution of note from the County's top order until Newton rode to the rescue, steering the side home in the company of Ollie Stone (10no).

The seconds have a three-day friendly away to Worcestershire starting next Tuesday (September 3).
