Northamptonshire's Second XI struggled after choosing to bat first on the opening day of their three-day match against Worcestershire at New Road on Tuesday.
The County were dismissed for 196 in the 60th over with only Josh Tolley (44), Christian Davis (27) and - lower down the order - Ollie Stone (42) making much of an impression with the bat.
Worcestershire's Brett d'Oliveira claimed the bowling honours with 5-33.
The hosts found batting a rather easier proposition as the sun came out later in the day and closed on 233-3 with a wicket apiece for Stone, Luke Evans and Vicram Sohal.
Alexei Kervezee hit an unbeaten 117 and shared a third-wicket stand worth 152 with Aneesh Kapil (63).
Play resumes on Wednesday morning.
