Northamptonshire's hopes of wrapping up LV= County Championship promotion suffered a setback as only 17.1 overs were bowled on day one of their Division Two match with Kent.
Persistent rain provided frustration at Wantage Road after Kent had reached 60 for the loss of Sam Northeast.
Northants went into the game 21 points ahead of third-placed Essex and well placed to return to the top flight for the first time since 2004.
Promotion would set the seal on what is already a memorable season for David Ripley’s men, who won the Friends Life t20 last month.
The hosts won the toss and unsurprisingly due to the gloomy conditions, elected to field. However, only 15 minutes play was possible before rain forced the players off.
After a delay of half an hour, the action resumed and Northants removed Northeast in the 14th over when David Murphy took a fine catch standing up to Andrew Hall.
Bad light interrupted proceedings soon after and the forecasted rain then arrived to bring the day to a premature halt.
