The first piece of cricket was played at the County Ground in 2014 yesterday, as Northants hosted neighbours Leicestershire. In reverse of the previous day’s play at Grace Road, Northants batted the first 60 overs and bowled the final 30.
After losing both openers reasonably early in the game, Kyle Coetzer managed to anchor the Northants innings scoring a steady 49, before being caught behind off Ireland just after lunch. James Kettleborough was also impressive, scoring 46 before being trapped lbw by Sykes.
In reply, Northants got off to a great start, with Olly Stone picking up a wicket in the opening over, quickly followed by a wicket by Muhammad Azhar Ullah. Stone was once again pick of the bowlers with figures of 1 for 23 from 8 overs. Also in the wickets was trialist Dave Burton as Leicestershire finished on 143 for 3, thanks to a half century from Eckersley.
Northants will play their final pre-season game of 2014, here at the County Ground on Tuesday 8th April, as they face Yorkshire in a three day game.
