On a day where the majority of LV= County Championship matches were heavily affected by rain, despite a brief delay during the morning session, 92 overs were played on day one of the match between Yorkshire and Northants at Headingley.
Yorkshire won the toss and despite the weather, Andrew Gale felt the pitch was too good not to bat on straight away. Northants made a great start though, as Muhammad Azhar Ullah struck early removing Adam Lyth for 11. Following the opening wicket, two more fell quickly as Andrew Hall and Azhar Ullah trapped Kane Williamson (3) and Andrew Gale (13) lbw respectively.
Yorkshire’s fourth wicket partnership between Alex Lees and Gary Ballance brought them back into the match, as the pair put on 156 runs before Hall trapped Lees lbw for 90. Ballance finished the day on 117 not out, as he continues to push for an England test spot.
Andrew Hall was the pick of the Northants bowlers, finishing the day with figures of 3 for 72. Azhar Ullah took 2 wickets for 59, whilst Maurice Chambers and Steven Crook picked up one wicket each, as Yorkshire ended the day on 328 for 7.
Northants will be looking to make an early breakthrough on day two, especially aiming at Gary Ballance, as they search for the final bowling point. Follow Northants on Twitter (@NorthantsCCC) for regular updates on play.
