Northants looked to bounce back after losing to Yorkshire last week, as they host Lancashire who are playing their first game since Peter Moores left to become England Head Coach.
It was overcast at the County Ground on the opening morning, which gave Stephen Peters an easy decision to bowl first, when he won the toss. Northants got off to a great start, with the bowlers not giving much away, whilst taking wickets at regular intervals.
Lancashire would have been very worried when they lost a sixth wicket with score only on 33. However solid innings by Procter (22), Chapple (26) and a cameo by Anderson (28), helped Lancashire get past 100, as the visitors were bowled out for 119.
Muhammad Azhar Ullah and Steven Crook were the pick of the Northants bowlers, taking 3 for 35 and 26 respectively. Olly Stone impressed taking 2 wickets for only 25 runs from 15 overs, whilst Andrew Hall took the other 2 wickets.
Northants had a bad start as Middlebrook was caught off England seamer James Anderson for 3. After the second wicket, Northants had a mini-collapse losing 4 wickets for only 6 runs. However the partnership between Matthew Spriegel and Ben Duuckett steadied the ship, as they put on 57 between them.
After Duckett was dismissed by England spinner Simon Kerrigan for an impressive 35, Northants lost another few quick wickets, but Matthew Spriegel once again this season was Northants’ rock, occupying the crease for nearly three hours. Spriegel ended the day on 43 not out, partnered by Olly Stone who is on 7 not out, as Northants finished on 133 for 8.
With showers expected tomorrow afternoon, Northants will want to solidify their advantage, as Tuesday looks clear at the moment but will be cloudy most of the day. Follow @NorthantsCCC on Twitter, to get regular match updates.
