After an eventful day one, Northants resumed on 133 for 8 leading Lancashire by 14 runs, with Matthew Spriegel and Olly Stone aiming to extend that lead, despite the overcast conditions.
The pair initially got off to a good start adding 22 before Stone was trapped lbw by Smith for 15. Spriegel was the man who led the Northants charge, scoring an excellent 62 before being caught off Smith, as Northants finished on 164 leading by 45 runs.
In reply, Lancashire started strongly as the wicket started to favour the batsmen more than the bowlers. Muhammad Azhar Ullah took the opening wicket, as Reece was caught for 10 and was quickly followed by Agathangelou who was trapped lbw by Andrew Hall for a duck.
Hall took three wickets, as Northants wrestled to try and keep control against a resurgent Lancashire batting line up, led by England wicket keeper Jos Buttler who ended the day on 66 not out, with Lancashire on 244/5 leading by 199.
With the pitch looking better for batting by the session, the match is on a knife edge and Northants will want to make some early inroads on day three. Play will start at 11am, with tickets costing £14 on the gate.
