David Capel, Head Coach and 1st Team manager

David has been at the County Ground for over 30 years, after joining Northants Cricket in 1979 as a 16-year-old professional. Progressing through the ranks from the 2nd XI, David made his debut for Northants in 1981 against Sri Lanka, aged just 18. In a 19 year playing career, ‘Capes’ made his England debut in 1986, and made his test debut the following year. David played against Pakistan, New Zealand, Australia, India and the West Indies. In all, David played in 15 tests and 23 ODI’s for England.

David supplemented his cricket in England with a two-year stint as Eastern Province’s Overseas Player.

In all, David scored 12,202 first class runs, 7011 List A runs, and took 800 wickets for Northants. In international cricket, ‘Capes’ scored over 700 runs and took 38 wickets – including the prized scalp of Sir Viv Richards three times. David appeared in six Lords Finals with Northants, and played an important role in the County’s 1992 NatWest trophy run, that ended with Northants beating Leicestershire in the Lords Final.

When his cricket playing career ended, David became Northants’ first Director of Excellence in 1998, before becoming Academy Director and 2nd XI Coach.

In 2006, David was named as Kepler Wessels’ successor as Northants’ Head Coach & 1st team manager, a position he currently holds.

Coaching was something David always took a keen interest in, and he was a Level 2 coach at 17. David was on the first cohort for the Level 3 badge in 1998, and in December 2002, David gained his Level 4 coaching badge – again, David was in the first cohort. For five years, David helped coach the England U17’s and U19’s from 1998, and also coached in South Africa and Australia during his playing career.

David said of his career in cricket so far, “I’ve enjoyed being a one club man, and continue to take great pride in seeing Northants be successful.”

“I still have energy and passion for the game and enjoy working in cricket. I see it as my role to help the players get the best out of themselves and to maximise their potential. I’m proud to have seen the team fiercely compete for promotion in the LV= County Championship, where we have narrowly missed out on promotion by a point on two occasions in the last three years. Add to that a Finals Day appearance and four quarter final appearances in the past six years, and we are close to success. I will continue to push our efforts into gaining silverware.”
